One of the things that is very important is that for young people not just learning in the classroom but what other type of learning is important for growth and development.

For the last ten years I have worked in a variety of academic and academic support capacities, peer tutor and peer tutor training and support, academic writing instruction and I have developed curriculum.

TEACHING ARTIST

As a teaching artist I offer workshops & residencies centered around acting and creative writing. Through active engagement of the Mind, Body, Voice and Soul actors of all ages can explore different characters and activate engaging performances.

My writing workshops are usually focused on identity. How does one identify themselves and what identities are 'assigned' to them? How can understanding ourselves help ease these tensions.

MENTORSHIP

It is impossible for me to think about being an educator and classroom instructor, without thinking about mentorship. So many amazing people helped shape my journey and trajectory as an educator, artist and human being. To be able to give that back to others is vital in my work.

I believe mentorship is the key to transforming schools from institutions into communities. Across the country black and brown students are waiting, eagerly, for teachers, administrators, coaches, someone, to connect with them.

HELPING BLACK BOYS ACHIEVE

I presented my first workshop, ‘Helping Black Boys Achieve: Breaking Social-Emotional Barriers Through Culturally-Relevant Mentorship’ at the 2019 School’s That Can National Forum. The workshop gives teachers and administrators the tools necessary to break down divides with their African American male students and build lasting connections that drive achievement inside of the classroom and beyond.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Victoria Russell host of the Perennials Podcast, to discuss my educational and artistic journey and the significant impact being mentor and serving as a mentor has had on me.
